In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, Al Khoory Automobiles, a prominent distributor in the UAE, has formed a strategic alliance with Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). This collaboration marks a major step in introducing Yutong green buses into Abu Dhabi’s public transport network, aligning with the UAE’s ambitious Net Zero target by 2050.
Al Khoory Automobiles, known for distributing Subaru, Yutong, and King Long vehicles, is at the forefront of this green initiative. The introduction of these eco-friendly buses is part of the ITC’s Green Bus Assessment (GBA) program, launched earlier this year, reflecting a commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in reducing carbon emissions.
The global shift towards electric vehicles is gaining momentum. In 2022, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported the sale of 66,000 electric buses and 60,000 medium- and heavy-duty trucks worldwide. Although China dominates this market, the UAE is making significant strides, with Al Khoory Automobiles leading the charge.
Yutong, a specialist in electric and hydrogen-fueled buses, sold over 30,000 coaches in 2022, including more than 12,000 green energy buses. With a 15% share of the global market and 28% in China, Yutong has emerged as one of the largest electric bus suppliers worldwide. Al Khoory Automobiles has been the exclusive UAE distributor for Yutong buses for two decades, recognized for their outstanding performance in 2022.
The partnership announcement by Hamed MT Khoory, Director of Al Khoory Group, comes at a pivotal time as the UAE hosts the COP28 Summit. This partnership underscores the UAE’s proactive approach to achieving its Net Zero target well ahead of 2050. Yutong’s cutting-edge technology, including advanced safety and noise reduction features, ensures a comfortable and environmentally friendly travel experience.
Tharun Divakaran, Senior Manager of Yutong Middle East, expressed pride in launching the electric buses in the UAE, aligning with the country’s zero-emission plan. The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi had earlier introduced its Green Buses Capacity Building Programme in collaboration with experts from South Korea and China. This program aims to enhance local expertise in managing hydrogen-fueled and electric bus operations and infrastructure.
This strategic partnership between Al Khoory Automobiles and Abu Dhabi’s ITC is a milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey towards a sustainable, efficient, and modern public transport system. It represents a blend of international collaboration, technological advancement, and a firm commitment to environmental stewardship, setting a benchmark for sustainable urban transit in the region.
