As the Apple Watch approaches its 10th anniversary, Apple is gearing up to introduce significant updates to its original smartwatch line, the “Series” models, this fall. According to a report by Bloomberg, these updates will include larger displays and a slimmer profile, while maintaining the overall design that users have come to recognize and love.
The new Series 10, codenamed N217 and N218, is set to feature screens comparable in size to the Apple Watch Ultra, providing a more expansive viewing experience. However, the Ultra, which saw an update in 2022, will not undergo significant design changes this time around.
Internally, both the Series 10 and the new Ultra 3 will be equipped with a new chip, potentially paving the way for future AI enhancements. Despite this, the anticipated Apple Intelligence suite of AI features will not be available on the Apple Watch initially, remaining exclusive to the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and eventually the Vision Pro.
Apple’s branding strategy for these new watches remains uncertain. Whether they will be marketed as special anniversary models or held for a larger release in 2025 is still up in the air. The original Apple Watch was announced in 2014 but launched in 2015, providing Apple with flexibility in its anniversary celebrations.
A major point of interest is the addition of new health tools to the Apple Watch. Apple has been developing technology to detect high blood pressure and sleep apnea, initially expected to be released this year. However, significant challenges have delayed these advancements. The blood pressure monitoring feature has faced reliability issues in testing, which may push back its launch. The sleep apnea detection feature, relying on blood oxygen saturation measurements, has encountered even greater obstacles, compounded by an ongoing legal dispute with Masimo Corp. Apple hopes to resolve these issues by September but acknowledges that delays are possible.
In addition to these new features, Apple is also exploring innovative manufacturing techniques, such as 3D-printing the chassis for some models. This approach could streamline production processes and reduce material usage, aligning with Apple’s commitment to sustainability.
As Apple prepares to celebrate a decade of its iconic smartwatch, these updates promise to enhance the functionality and appeal of the Apple Watch, solidifying its place as a leader in wearable technology. With a blend of cutting-edge health features and innovative design, the upcoming models are eagerly anticipated by both current users and new customers alike.
