Dubai’s New Solar-Powered ‘Rail Bus’ Set to Transform Public Transport

Dubai is set to introduce a groundbreaking addition to its public transport network—the Rail Bus, an autonomous, solar-powered vehicle made from 100% recyclable, 3D-printed materials. This cutting-edge system, currently under development, is designed to enhance urban mobility with an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

A Glimpse at the Future of Public Transport

A prototype of the Rail Bus is currently on display at the World Government Summit 2025, held at Madinat Jumeirah. With a sleek black and gold exterior, the futuristic vehicle features two rows of bright orange seats and dedicated space for passengers with disabilities, ensuring an inclusive travel experience. Each carriage can accommodate 40 passengers, with 22 seats available per unit.

To enhance passenger convenience, digital screens above the seats will display real-time updates on the journey, including upcoming stops, weather conditions, and time. The interior also features safety instructions and control panels at both ends of the carriage for seamless operation.

Sustainable, Cost-Effective, and Autonomous

Designed for first- and last-mile connectivity, the Rail Bus will integrate seamlessly with Dubai’s existing public transport network, offering flexible and frequent routes to improve accessibility across the emirate.

The system will run on elevated tracks, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. Measuring 2.9 meters in height and 11.5 meters in length, the Rail Bus will be fully powered by solar energy and operated autonomously, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing carbon emissions.

This project aligns with Dubai’s strategic vision to become a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility. It supports several key national initiatives, including:

  • UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy
  • Dubai’s Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050
  • Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030 (which aims for 25% of daily trips to be autonomous by 2030)

By leveraging lightweight 3D-printed materials, the Rail Bus ensures minimal environmental impact while maximizing efficiency, reinforcing Dubai’s reputation as a pioneer in futuristic transport solutions.

Sheikh Mohammed’s Endorsement

During the World Government Summit, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, visited the RTA’s platform to review the new transport innovation. He was accompanied by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence.

While the official launch date has yet to be announced, the Rail Bus is poised to redefine urban mobility in Dubai, offering a sustainable, cost-efficient, and high-tech solution for the city’s expanding transport needs.

Stay tuned for more updates on this revolutionary transport system, which promises to make Dubai one of the most advanced and sustainable cities in the world!
