Etihad Rail's Inaugural Passenger Journey Paves Way for Abu Dhabi-Dubai in Just 50 Minutes

Etihad Rail, the United Arab Emirates’ national railway network, has taken a significant step forward in transforming the country’s transportation landscape. On January 25, the rail service successfully conducted its first passenger journey between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhannah, marking the beginning of a new era in travel across the UAE. This initial route is a result of the strategic partnership between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Etihad Rail.

This inaugural journey is just the beginning of a much more ambitious plan. In the future, Etihad Rail aims to link all seven emirates through its passenger network. While the official dates for the launch of passenger rail operations across the emirates are yet to be announced, this initial journey is a clear indication of the progress being made.

Etihad Rail’s freight train services have already been operational since 2023, and the eventual completion of its 900 km network will connect 11 cities across the UAE, stretching from Al Sila in the western region of Abu Dhabi to Fujairah.

One of the most anticipated features of Etihad Rail’s passenger service is the significant reduction in travel times between major cities. Once fully operational, the service will enable passengers to travel from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in just 50 minutes, and from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah in approximately one hour and 40 minutes, at speeds of up to 200 km/h. The trains are expected to offer modern amenities, including Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, charging points, and a variety of food and beverage options, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

In addition to its domestic ambitions, Etihad Rail is looking to expand its reach across borders. In September 2022, the company signed an agreement with Oman Rail to establish the Oman-Etihad Rail Company. This venture aims to develop a 303 km railway link between Sohar and Abu Dhabi, cutting down travel time between the two cities to just one hour and 40 minutes, and from Sohar to Al Ain to 47 minutes.

Etihad Rail’s developments are poised to revolutionize travel and connectivity in the region, offering a fast, efficient, and comfortable alternative to road transport. As the network expands and becomes fully operational, it promises to not only enhance the travel experience within the UAE but also strengthen transportation links with neighboring countries.
