Honda Announces Major Recall of Over 750,000 Vehicles Due to Air Bag Sensor Issue

Honda, the renowned automobile manufacturer, has issued a recall for more than 750,000 vehicles in the United States. This recall addresses a critical issue where a faulty sensor could inadvertently trigger the front passenger airbags.

The recall encompasses a wide range of models across both the Honda and Acura brands. Affected Honda models include the Pilot, Accord, Civic sedan, HR-V, and Odyssey from the 2020 to 2022 model years, along with the 2020 Fit and Civic Coupe. The recall also extends to the 2021 and 2022 Civic hatchback, the 2021 Civic Type R and Insight, and the 2020 and 2021 CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Passport, Ridgeline, and Accord Hybrid. From the Acura luxury brand, the 2020 and 2022 MDX, the 2020 through 2022 RDX, and the 2020 and 2021 TLX are included.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released documents stating the issue stems from the front passenger seat weight sensor, which may crack and short-circuit. This malfunction could lead to failure in deactivating the airbag when it is supposed to be turned off. These sensors are crucial for disabling airbags in situations where children or small adults are seated in the front passenger seat. A malfunctioning sensor poses an increased risk of injury as the airbag may deploy unexpectedly.

To address this issue, Honda dealers will replace the faulty seat sensors free of charge. Vehicle owners affected by this recall will start receiving notifications from March 18.

Despite the extensive nature of this recall, Honda has reported 3,834 warranty claims related to this issue but thankfully no injuries or deaths have been reported from June 30, 2020, to January 19 of this year.

This recall is a proactive measure by Honda to ensure the safety of its customers and prevent potential injuries. Vehicle owners are encouraged to heed the recall notice and get the necessary repairs done promptly. Honda’s commitment to addressing safety concerns and taking prompt action reflects its dedication to customer safety and maintaining high standards in vehicle manufacturing.
